About this Unit

Instrumentation and Control is vital to the operation of modern automation systems. In this unit, you will learn about Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and how to program them. These devices accept signals from sensors which monitor the performance of an automation system, and produce signals which adjust its operation. You will learn about the principles of operation of sensors and their accuracy specifications, the design of appropriate instrumentation amplifiers, and the characteristics of data acquisition devices. You will also learn about control algorithms such as the PID, and how to set their parameters to keep the automation system functioning efficiently. Finally, you will learn how to design for Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM), and for the appropriate Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
