About this Unit

Students will be required to plan and conduct an independent research project in an area of Earth and Planetary Sciences under the guidance of a supervisor, resulting in the preparation, submission, presentation and defence of a dissertation. Students will develop a project proposal involving the formulation of research questions and hypotheses; selection of appropriate methodology and experimental design; ethical consideration of the research process; critical review of scientific literature. Students will develop research and technical skills in data acquisition and interpretation, research autonomy, and specialised knowledge through a process of scientific inquiry. Students will develop professional and communication skills by presenting and defending research findings orally to an audience, and effective scientific writing via the preparation of a dissertation that utilises professional academic approaches and standards to avoid plagiarism and uphold academic integrity.
