About this Unit

Climate change is the biggest global challenge facing the world today, affecting both natural processes and the sustainability of human communities. From the weather experienced, through to food and water security, health, settlement viability, and the sustainability of our surrounding ecosystems, Earth’s climate system influences every aspect of our existence and environment. This unit will equip students from any academic area with a robust understanding of the science underpinning climate change. Students will start by learning the basic principles of how different parts of earth’s climate system work, and then go on to explore more specialised topics. These include how we understand past climates and use these to predict future changes and how we measure climate change in different systems. The unit supports students in understanding how science exists in a social and ethical context, including the disproportionate impact of climate change on Indigenous communities, and the importance of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge in monitoring and mitigation. Students will also explore issues around the use of data, science communication, and misinformation, growing their skills as ethical and critical thinkers.
