About this Unit

Earth’s resources are essential in supporting human life – from the water we drink and the soil in which we grow our food, the fossil fuel we burn to keep ourselves warm and maintain industrial activities to the periodic table we employ for the vehicles and electronics of our modern, globalised, and fast-paced digital world, including the entire house we live in. In this unit, we will explore various geological resources that support society and entire economies and consider how these finite resources can be managed sustainably in a changing world. Topics include the key earth resources and their geological context - what they are, where we find and how we exploit them; energy transitions – from fossil fuels to a low carbon world based on renewable technologies; weighing up costs vs benefits in resource exploitation; and the impact to the environment and its sustainable management. Students will work across theoretical lectures and practical workshops to identify environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) in earth resource exploration and extraction, and evaluate and develop solutions to these key challenges that will allow human progress in the 21st century. It won't come as a surprise that this unit covers more than half of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as core content: SDG3 (health), SDG6 (clean water), SDG7 (clean energy), SDG9 (sustainable infrastructure), SDG11 (sustainable cities), SDG12 (responsible consumption), SDG13 (climate action), SDG14 (life below water), and SDG15 (life on land).
