About this Unit

This unit is about teaching English in the Primary years. The focus of this unit is on pre-service teachers developing an in-depth understanding of teaching children to read and write. Teaching reading and writing will be situated in the context of understanding different perspectives and theories about how children become literate. This unit will prepare pre-service teachers with knowledge of the multiple components to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers and writers at various stages of their development. In addition, the unit will provide pre-service teachers with the basis for creating rich learning experiences for children.
