About this Unit

The first part of the unit provides an overview of a communication system and an introduction to random processes. Next, digital encoding of time-continuous analogue signals and pulse-code modulation (PCM) are discussed. Baseband and passband digital transmissions are then covered in detail including Nyquist’s criteria, intersymbol interference, eye diagram, multidimensional digital modulation, and probability of error. This is followed by optimum receiver design, error control coding and waveform equalisation. Finally, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication is discussed.
