About this Unit

This unit introduces the fundamental transport equations used to represent momentum, heat, and mass transfer in process systems. The boundary layer concept and the effect of drag and friction on flow behavior are discussed for various engineering scenarios. Concepts related to conductive and convective heat transport in different systems are covered. Fundamentals of mass transfer through diffusion and convection will be discussed, with and without chemical reaction. Case studies are presented on the analogies of viscosity, diffusivity, and thermal conductivity. Empirical correlations, dimensionless numbers, and their significance in solving transport phenomena problems are included. Further, this unit introduces computational fluid dynamic (CFD) technique to provide hands-on experience in using a state-of-the-art CFD solver based on the control volume approach for problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer and mass transfer.
