About this Unit

This unit provides students with the opportunity to design and build real spacecraft systems on a small scale. The unit consists of multidisciplinary design activities followed by a team-based project where members will work together within a systems engineering framework to implement and integrate a space system with a focus on developing practical industry skills. Practical skills developed within the unit include project management, printed circuit board (PCB) design, surface mount PCB assembly (soldering), 3D computer aided drafting (CAD), basic finite element analysis, and microcontroller programming. Students will receive feedback on their designs from their colleagues as well as industry experts and researchers in the field. The systems will be modelled, tested and validated in relevant space environments with the aim of producing a working engineering model which establishes the design for the production of a future flight model which could operate in space with minimal revision.
