About this Unit

Predictive modelling and analytics uses historical data to capture relationships between predictors and explanatory variables and exploits them to predict future outcomes. It is widely used by actuaries in insurance and many other risk management applications. This unit will introduce students to the theory and practice of contemporary statistical and machine learning methods with a focus on actuarial applications. In addition to modelling students will learn about the importance of the business context, data cleaning and wrangling, model checking and evaluation, and effective and appropriate verbal and written communication of results. Students will carry out analyses using open source software such as the R language environment for statistical computing.
